I'll get into that game later (I could probably write a book about it), but I too was disappointed in the lack of free movement. I think, though, sometimes we get too caught up with our own perceptions of the franchises we love and we don't let them have room to try new things, which might be why I've heard so much cries of disappointment in this console generation. For example, while I loved running around and exploring in Super Mario 64, when you get down to it that's not quite what Mario games are about. Once I got past that about a year after Galaxy's release, I enjoyed it far more then I did earlier. Like you said, though, there have been some blemishes this gen. In particular, I agree about Twilight Princess and City Folk and Corruption didn't really grab me either.

Difficulty isn't really that important to me, although I did feel it was important to point out. I've heard the game gets much difficult after the main game, but I haven't had much time to play, not to mention posting, in the past week due to finals/graduation. I aim to jump right back in on Friday.

The Space Storm theme is a great one, although for some unfathomable reason the levels it was featured in didn't really grab me. It will be showcased eventually. There's really no denying the quality of the soundtrack, though it's tough to top Gusty Garden. Personally, I like how much more light-hearted and bouncy it is here.

Lucky for you, I did get to play the co-op mode last week. It was a really interesting experience and hopefully I'll get a chance to delve more into it by the time I post my next entry about the game (less then a week or so). I plan to wrap up SMB soon so I can focus on that and Kirby.

Yikes, I just noticed I forgot to finish a sentence in this entry. I'd better get on that.Anthonyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12823666211533878050noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-274272595406297504.post-85376433239284596782010-06-09T16:31:48.906-07:002010-06-09T16:31:48.906-07:00Great review, fellow Nintendo fan (caught the refe...Great review, fellow Nintendo fan (caught the reference in your blog's name too).

I only just got Super Mario Galaxy 2 a week or so ago but I certainly was not disappointed with Mario's newest platformer. I had foolishly decided to skip over the first Mario Galaxy so the jump into SMG2 was almost a blind one. Of course I expected the game to be excellent, as Nintendo's developer branch is responsible for very few flops (I'm looking at you Twilight Princess), but I was anxious as my last exposure to a 3D Mario game was Sunshine and before that Mario 64. My favorite aspect of the last two 3D Mario platformers was the freedom an open world allowed you, especially in Mario 64, where you could spend hours in the first world alone simply running around and flexing Mario's recently acquired acrobatic muscle. Thus when the level design was described to me as "linear" my heart sunk. However once in game the level designed not only proved to be imaginative but well designed.

I must admit you are right in one respect about the difficulty (and perhaps by extension the length) of the game. From the first world to the "last" world (you probably know why the quotes are there) the game can be completed in less than three or four days if played at a fairly steady pace and with very little trouble. However, the difficulty, and by extension the lifespan, of the game drastically increases when you consider going for a 100%, finding new ways around old obstacles, and over all just improving your skills. After all even if you can beat the game quickly it doesn't mean you can do it well yet.

As for the music I can say without blinking an eye that SMG2 has one of the best soundtracks of any Nintendo game in recent memory. It combines the best of the old school style, that of simple and memorable melodies, with the new school technology of orchestrated tracks. The end result is a long list of tracks that are both nostalgic and refreshing at the same time. Your selected excerpts do a good job demonstrating this aspect. Perhaps consider putting Space Storm theme up, as I think its one of the best in the game.

Looking forward to the continuation of this evaluation. Be sure to mention SMG2 simple but fun take on coop in the next part!GPalacionoreply@blogger.com
