That requires some investigation on my front.

In regards to Kirby's Adventure, that actually came from an old feature on Nintendo World Report, when they visited Nintendo of America back when they were originally Planet GameCube. Remember back when Nintendo awarded Player's Choice - Million Seller awards on games they published? They came across a wall adorned with games awarded with that title in America, and Kirby's Adventure happened to be one of them!

And I believe Squeak Squad's sales came from...NeoGAF, I think? They ban any mention of VGChartz, so I was confident enough to mention that. I'll double-check on that later this week just for you.

Anyway, as excited as I am to tackle Super Star Ultra, you might have to wait just a bit longer for reasons I'll divulge in a post tomorrow (and I have two non-Kirby reviews queued up). Regardless, I aim to get it out in August! It is the ONLY Kirby game I have never booted up, not even once, upon completing it. And I completed it in... five days and 12 clocked hours. There is no other Kirby game I have clocked less hours on. Not even some of the shallower spin-offs, like Star Stacker. For every reason you have mentioned, it is, by a wide stretch, the most anonymous Kirby game, out of the 24 to date (I obviously cannot vouch on the extra two, the Japan-exclusive Super Star Stacker and Toy Box). Much like with seeing an so-so movie, you find you have absolutely nothing, or very little, to say about it, positive or negative. In fact, I just saw Minions, and it's the perfect comparison to Squeak Squad in every quality-related category.

That said, some of the points you made were very interesting. Most of them I agreed on, like the power-ups, poorly executed second-screen usage and music. However, I can't remember, even somewhat, any of the sound effects. Lucky me, eh, Anthony?

I might also point out that I did indeed go through the Extra Mode. Apart from completing it in about 40% of the time it took me to do the main game, I have nothing to add about it, mind. Still, the DS Sleep Mode came in handy there!

I once remember reading a review of my favourite Pixar film, A Bug's Life, that (wrongly) said it was their only film thus far (written before The Incredibles) whose pleasures would be reserved for the diaper set. While that's just not true, that would apply to this game. Or, at least, to the pleasures only applying for those in single digits. That's the best way to round the game up - enjoyable for those in single digits, passable but anonymous for the rest of us. For a series with 24 games that all have something individually distinctive about them, it has to register as a serious disappointment. For shame, Squeak Squad.

As for the cover, I have little trouble pretending those eyebrows don't exist whenever I look at it. Boy, it's gonna be weird when you get to the pair of Mass Attack and Return To Dream Land, where I didn't have to endure Angry Kirby at all, but merely logo-swapped variations of their Japanese Box Arts. Sorry about mentioning that, it's the one thing I have over the US as a Kirby fan in Europe.

I'm curious, though, Anthony - where exactly do you get your sales data that you sparingly quote throughout your Kirby articles? Some, like Kirby's Dream Land selling over 5 million, are existent on the halfway reliable VgChartz, but given how under-tracked a lot of the games there are, I rarely trust it much. Nintendo's Financial Supplementary Analysis' helpful too for knowing how much the games sell in their first year, but there isn't much beyond that. Some figures you've quoted include Adventure selling over a million in the States alone, Dream Land 2 surpassing the first in Japan (so above 1.7 million or so), and this one selling 3 million and being the third best-selling game, with my instinct telling me that Super Star Ultra is second. Care to comment?

Anyway, the worst Kirby's game out of the picture now. On to the remake of the best one, eh, bud? Don't keep me waiting!

Mike.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-274272595406297504.post-77881338356989103082015-07-17T17:14:29.533-07:002015-07-17T17:14:29.533-07:00Great column!!
